The primary difference in the UAE tax regime is that corporate tax is a direct tax levied on a company’s net taxable profit, whereas Value Added Tax is an indirect consumption tax collected on taxable supplies of goods and services. Solvico Advisory assists Dubai businesses in managing both Federal Tax Authority frameworks through aligned accounting, registration, and return filing.
Core Structural Differences
Understanding the fundamental distinctions between direct and indirect taxes prevents administrative confusion for UAE business owners. While both regimes are administered by the Federal Tax Authority through the EmaraTax digital portal, their legal mechanisms and commercial impacts differ substantially.

| Standard Tax Rate | 9% on profits above threshold (0% below) | Flat 5% on standard-rated supplies |

| Ultimate Tax Bearer | The operating business entity | The end consumer or purchasing client |
| Mandatory Threshold | Mandatory registration for all juridical entities | Annual taxable supplies exceeding AED 375,000 |
| Filing Frequency | Annual return submission | Quarterly or monthly return submission |
| Submission Deadline | Within 9 months after financial year end | Within 28 days following tax period end |
Rates and Tax Bases
Corporate tax is calculated on the net adjusted income of an enterprise rather than its total commercial turnover. Under UAE tax regulations, taxable profits up to AED 375,000 incur a 0% rate, while profits exceeding this amount incur a standard 9% rate. Eligible small businesses with gross annual revenues below AED 3,000,000 may also elect for small business relief to treat their taxable profit as zero during applicable tax periods.
Value Added Tax applies at a flat 5% rate directly to the selling price of goods and services at each point of supply. Certain transactions qualify for a 0% zero-rated treatment, such as qualifying exports or international transport, while other services like basic financial instruments remain exempt. Unlike corporate profits, VAT does not depend on whether your business operates at a profit or loss.
Registration and Filing Cycles
Corporate tax mandates registration for all UAE-incorporated mainland and free zone juridical persons, regardless of revenue levels. Natural persons conducting commercial activities must register once their annual gross turnover exceeds AED 1,000,000 within a Gregorian calendar year. Businesses submit one corporate tax return annually within 9 months following the close of their financial year.
Value Added Tax registration operates under distinct statutory caps rather than automatic entity coverage. Businesses must register for VAT within 30 days if taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 across a 12-month period or are projected to do so in the next 30 days . Entities with supplies or expenses exceeding AED 187,500 may apply for voluntary registration to recover incurred input tax.
- VAT returns require quarterly or monthly filing on EmaraTax within 28 days of period closure.
- Corporate Tax returns are generally filed annually within nine months from the end of the relevant Tax Period. Taxpayers must maintain appropriate financial records and financial statements, while audited financial statements are required for specified categories of taxpayers, including Qualifying Free Zone Persons and other categories prescribed under the applicable regulations.
- Input VAT paid to suppliers is offset directly against output VAT collected from customers .
- Corporate tax deductions are limited to verified business expenditures incurred exclusively for business operations.
Free Zone Treatment Rules
For Corporate Tax purposes, a Free Zone Person may qualify for the 0% Corporate Tax rate on Qualifying Income if it meets the conditions applicable to a Qualifying Free Zone Person. The treatment depends on the nature and source of income, Qualifying Activities, Excluded Activities and other prescribed conditions. Non-qualifying income may be subject to the applicable Corporate Tax rate.
Under the VAT regime, free zone businesses remain within the UAE VAT framework. However, specific VAT treatment may apply to transactions involving a Designated Zone, subject to the applicable conditions. Certain supplies of goods within or between Designated Zones may fall outside the scope of UAE VAT where the prescribed conditions are met, while supplies of services are generally subject to the normal UAE VAT place-of-supply and tax rules. Most standard-rated services are subject to 5% VAT, while certain services may qualify for zero-rating or exemption depending on the applicable VAT rules
